We are in the middle of a sermon series on Genesis, so in this sermon I question the traditional teachings around humanity being given “dominion” and “rule” over creation; which are now very problematic terms to use when discussing the role of the church and Christians in the world.
However, I relished the chance to dig into the Genesis text, wrestle with the meaning and interpretation of some of these words, and came up with an updated definition for Creation Care.
creation care (n.)
the responsibility given to humanity, by God, of being Servant-Protectors who actively protect creation from damage and harm
In light of this, I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Connell Miller, a climate scientist who is also part of our church community, on the current climate crisis. I asked him:
* Why should Christians care about climate change, right NOW?
* Where can Christians show up in the climate crisis?
I wrapped up this teaching time by outlining some practical steps Christians, or any human, can take towards leaving Creation better than we found it.
- Learn and Listen
- Lament, Repent, and Pray
- Take Collective Action
This was an intensely personal sermon, but I hope it also serves as a leaping off point for continuing conversations, worship, and action. Flowing out of this, I am organizing a Creation Care Vigil, to be hosted by Hillside Church London, on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 7-9pm. I hope you will join us in person, as we try to live out our God-given responsibility as Servant Protectors of Creation.
